Bollywood releases the highest number of films every year in the world. Movies are the number one source of entertainment in our country. Every Friday or every time a new movie is released, the theaters are crowded. And if the movie stars some big-shot celebrity, the collection for sure hits crores and crores of rupees.

8 Ways How Movies Help Shape Our Society

Movies span diverse genres like action, drama, romance, comedy, and more, each with a unique impact. Let's delve into how movies influence our lives and shape our society.

1) Reflection on Social Issues

Movies often serve as a mirror that reflects the social issues prevalent in society. They shed light on important topics such as racism, gender inequality, poverty, and political unrest. By presenting these issues on the big screen, movies initiate conversations, raise awareness, and encourage viewers to reflect on their own beliefs and biases.

Powerful films like "12 Years a Slave" and "Selma" have played significant roles in bringing attention to racial injustice, prompting societal discussions, and inspiring action for change.

2) Catalyst for Empathy

Movies have the unique ability to evoke empathy by immersing viewers in diverse perspectives and experiences. They enable us to step into the shoes of characters from different backgrounds, cultures, and circumstances. By depicting the struggles and triumphs of others, movies foster understanding, compassion, and empathy.

Films like "Philadelphia" and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" tackle sensitive subjects and foster empathy towards individuals facing challenges such as discrimination and mental health issues.

3) Shaping Cultural Identity

Cinema plays a vital role in shaping cultural identity by showcasing diverse stories, traditions, and heritage. Movies allow us to celebrate our own cultures and learn about those of others. They provide a platform for underrepresented communities to share their narratives, fostering a sense of pride and inclusivity.

Films like "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Coco" have not only entertained audiences but also emphasized the importance of cultural representation and unity.

4) Influence on Fashion and Trends

Movies have a significant impact on fashion and trends, influencing our style choices and preferences. Iconic films like "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "The Devil Wears Prada" have inspired fashion trends and shaped popular culture. The release of "Top Gun" popularized Ray-Ban glasses.

Costumes, hairstyles, and accessories showcased on screen often become fashion statements and drive consumer demand. The entertainment industry's influence on fashion extends beyond the red carpet, permeating everyday life and shaping our personal styles.

5) Promoting Social Activism

Movies have the power to ignite social activism by shedding light on pressing issues and motivating viewers to take action. Documentaries like "An Inconvenient Truth" and "Blackfish" have sparked global movements, driving environmental and animal rights activism, respectively.

Fictional films with social justice themes, such as "Erin Brockovich" and "Milk," have inspired viewers to stand up for what they believe in and fight for positive change.

6) Influencing Political Discourse

Movies can influence political discourse and shape public opinion. Films like "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "The Big Short" have presented critical perspectives on political events and economic systems, challenging the status quo and prompting debates.

Through compelling storytelling, movies can provide alternative narratives and encourage viewers to question prevailing ideologies, fostering a more informed and engaged citizenry.

7) Preservation of History

Movies have become important tools for preserving history, capturing significant events and moments in time. Historical dramas like "Schindler's List" and "12 Years a Slave" ensure that important stories are not forgotten and that the lessons of the past are passed on to future generations.

By vividly depicting historical events, movies contribute to our collective memory and understanding of our shared history.

8) Escapism and Entertainment

Movies offer a form of escapism and entertainment, providing a temporary reprieve from daily life. They transport us to different worlds, allowing us to unwind, relax, and find solace in the stories and characters depicted on screen.

This form of entertainment has psychological benefits, offering relief from stress and creating a sense of community as we share in the collective experience of watching and discussing films.

  1. Wonderful post Felicia :) I don't know if its a random selection of movies or the one's you've watched that you've put in the pictures, I've watched all of 'em barring a couple maybe :)
The latest I watched was Neerja, just yesterday :) Taare Zameen Par was a beautiful movie too, along with so many others that make bollywood movies worth watching.
I can't believe they actually put the movie 'Grand Masti' in a bus... not a movie to be watched with different age groups together, certainly not in a bus!!

As for Grand Masti, I agree, it's definitely not suitable for all age groups, and I was surprised to see it on the bus too! It's essential to be mindful of the content when watching movies in public spaces.
